Chapter Eighteen

Austin shuffled around trying to find a way to sit that was comfortable, but he knew he was just wasting his time even trying. The hard wooden pew beneath him dug awkwardly into the bony part of his bottom, and he knew he was never going to be comfortable on this seat. He noted that the temperature within the church was cool enough to be uncomfortable too.

Austin had never been able to work out why the people who designed and built the interior of churches seemed to go out of their way to make them as uncomfortable as possible, but every church he had ever been in was uncomfortable. And not just because as an atheist, Austin always felt out of place in the building. No, it was because they all the hardest wooden seats with not even a minimal bit of padding, and they were always cold. It was like the priests wanted to be welcoming, but not too welcoming. They wanted you to come, but they most certainly didn’t want you to feel at home and maybe stay a while.

He and Maria had arrived early for the mass to secure the seats at the back that they needed to sit in so that the shadows from the plinth could conceal the cellphone in Maria’s hand. She had switched the cellphone to airplane mode before they entered the church so that she could record the congregation members on it without the risk of any calls or text messages or social media notifications flooding in and drawing attention to her. The church was starting to fill up now, and Austin glanced down at his watch. Maria laughed softly and shook her head.

“You’re in for a long wait yet,” she said. “Some of these masses go on for hours.”

Austin groaned and rolled his eyes, wishing he were anywhere but here. He was seriously starting to wish he had taken up Maria on her offer of her coming here alone, but he had declined knowing that Mike would be here. He didn’t want him to think that they weren’t giving the case their full attention.

“Can you wake me up when it’s done?” Austin said with a grin.

“And who is going to wake me up first?” Maria laughed. “I really didn’t sign up for this, you know.”

“You and me both,” Austin agreed. “Guys with guns who would shoot me as soon as look at me just because I was in uniform, sure, bring them on. But mass? No way.”

They both laughed and whispered together for a bit longer. After a while, they fell silent, no longer joking around as their pew and the ones in front of them began to fill up. Austin glanced at his watch again and saw not five minutes had passed since the last time he had looked at it.

Needing to do something to distract himself from the way time had slowed down to an almost stop, he looked around the church, trying to spot anyone who looked suspicious, but he couldn’t see anyone or anything out of the ordinary.
